12. Who washes the Zakys in the hospitals? Do hospitals allow mothers to wash/scent the Zaky at home?
The rules and procedures that apply to blankets, clothes, etc may be also applied to the Zakys. It is designed to be fully washable without disassembly in machines, including industrial machines. It has 3 reinforced seams (2 on the lining and one on the fleece) and must be washed inside the washing bag that is provided with each Zaky.
Hospitals use one or more of the following options:
Some encourage the mothers to wash the Zakys at home. Ideally, mothers take the Zaky home and wash it with the baby’s clothes and blanket with a soft soap so the baby starts smelling what he/she will smell at home. They can take the soiled Zakys inside the washing bag and bring the clean Zakys inside the Vinyl bag with the zipper. Both bags are included with the Zaky.
In some hospitals volunteers or nurses are glad to wash them at the washers at the Unit or even at home.
Other hospitals wash them with the other items in the unit (blankets, t-shirts, baby nests, etc).
13. How does the Zaky help with my baby's posture while sitting up?
Under normal circumstances every 2 days, however, the nurse or mom uses her judgment to decide how often to wash the Zaky. It compares to other positioning items such as the baby nests, etc. We recommend having 2 Zakys per baby so both can be used simultaneously or the baby always keeps one while the other is being washed/scented.
14. Can we use the same Zaky with different babies?
We do not recommend it. For safety reasons we do not recommend that the same Zaky be used with different babies. The Zaky was designed to be a personal item that the baby will get used to (scent, weight, feel, etc) and that will help with the transition from the hospital to the house. To facilitate this, the Zaky has a place on the label for the name of the baby. A permanent marker can also be used to write the name of the baby across the washing bag to ensure that the Zakys go to the original baby.
However, some hospitals “recycle” the Zakys after washing them, just as they do with towels and other positioning items so they do not keep track of what Zaky goes with each baby. Needless to say, if the Zaky is not clean it should not be shared.
